Chilean Earthquake vs. Haiti Earthquake
The Earthquake in Chile has impacted both the people of Chile and the world. Having two catastrophic earthquakes in the beginning of the new year is not good news for earth, it may be the start of something worst to come. Some may say that the earthquake in Haiti seems to be getting more coverage and aid but Chile's earthquake was not as devastating but it is still receiving help. Scientist claim that the two earthquakes are not in any way similar but the causes were tectonics and poverty. Haiti's weak building materials and poor construction standards share much of the blame for the grotesque numbers of fatalities, injured and internally displaced people. Whereas, most of Chilean buildings are up-to-code and prepared for any disasters that may occur, although many died in the earthquake, they were most likely poor and not able to seek safe shelter.Looters have been a big problem in both these earthquakes, people who are just trying to get food are see this as an opportunity but Chilean president Michelle Bachelet says that more than 13,000 soldiers are being dispatched to secure order. The death toll stood at 723 Tuesday, with 544 reported killed in Maul, where a sewer system collapsed and several water towers were close to toppling, the National Emergency Office said. But to say that the Haiti earthquake is receiving more relief than that of Chile is preposterous, Haiti is a poorer country and should be receiving aid due to their higher death toll but both should be helped. Hopefully the countries recover from this and this tragedy shall never be put on them again. Three sources I used were www.bbc.com, www.dailynews.com, and www.cnn.com.
